We’re proud to announce that we are receiving the Frederick Douglass Award from the North Star Fund!
Each year, the Frederick Douglass Award goes to two “outstanding grassroots groups whose organizing and activism have led to significant victories on the front lines of social justice.” Past recipients include Make the Road New York, Democracy Now!, and many more organizations we look up to. This year we will be accepting the Frederick Douglass Award alongside the Brooklyn Movement Center at the North Star Fund’s 2018 Community Gala.
We are so excited to share this news, and this award, with you all. The Frederick Douglass Award recognizes the magnitude of our struggle against Central Hudson and our latest victory that resulted in a significant reduction in shutoffs each year, particularly in working-class communities of color. Moreover, this award marks an important milestone of ours as we grow our team, expand our geographic reach, and deepen our statewide work for utility affordability and driver’s licenses for all New Yorkers.
On April 17th, we’ll also be sharing the stage with individual changemakers who inspire us every day — Cristina Jiménez Moreta, Executive Director of United We Dream, Héctor Figueroa, President of 32BJ Service Employees International Union, and Stephen Adly Guirgis, acclaimed playwright, director, and actor.
The North Star Fund is a community foundation that supports grassroots groups leading the movement for equality, economic justice, and peace in New York City, and as of 2017, the Hudson Valley too. Since its founding in 1979, the North Star Fund has granted over $49 million to 2,000 community organizations, and we’re lucky to have been one of them in the past year.
If you’re able, please consider joining us at this momentous occasion on April 17th. You can learn more about the Community Gala and purchase tickets here.
